Hi zoe, i have been using this alot today. I was reading some info about a vide artist called David Larcher, in 'Film Art Phenomena'. he did alot of work in early to late 90's the example quoted is Videovoid(1993) where the imagery of the film is derived from film 'dropout'. Nicky Hamlyn quotes 'The images spring out of a negative paradox, tape dropout being a trace of an absence, in this case of magnetic coating from the tape's base material, resulting in the horizontal white lines familiar to viewers of rented videos. Larcher has long been interested in the trace, a phenomenon that can be distinguished from the indexical sign by its immateriality. A footprint stands as evidence... The trace, by contrast, exists only fleetingly, as a record of an event such as the passing of a bird, that might leave more evidence than a momentary disturbance in the movement of the air. Some such phenomena, or epiphenomena, will only be caught, if at all, as a moving image' (page 5-6)
it just made me think about the line of thought in your presentation, i hope you find it useful

Hi Gemma, thanks for the David Larcher tip, very useful to find out more about the wonderful ways in which people manage to capture traces which are so fleeting, plus it sounds as if D.L is quite self reflexive in his exploration of traces and video media which I find that this subject calls for. There's this quote, in Parkett number 66(available from StPete's) at start of an article p6 'I can't see but I can touch.'_Anonymous woman,Brooklyn,NY(October 2002) and then the article develops on film and our understanding of it as viewers, there is another passage on the camera obscura as space 'an architecture of viewing' p7, which I thought might be of interest to you as it links up with your proposition of camera obscura space, which I am actually very intrigued by now! I have just sent off my proposal for xmas bazaar stall, and have just had an idea that it might still be time to put forward to the group and Julia(organiser): to hold a stall to raise funds for our degree show.I think it could be quite a fun way to independently raise some cash and get more focused, before the mega next two terms land on our plates..! Tell me what you think, Bye' Zoe
